Blog: Advice

If I was to be hired by Baruch College to use new media to improve the college, there are 2 important suggestions I would make using new media.

Firstly, to answer which type of new media I would incorporate into improving the college, I would choose a Wiki site for all things Baruch. As Baruch is already active on social media platforms such as Twitter and Instagram, I felt as if a Wiki page could consolidate a lot of important information for the students, by the students. Using wiki, the student base would be encouraged to create detailed pages for their majors, so that incoming students can use it as a clear reference for the path they want to pursue. While Baruch has the information on their own site, the wiki would be more concise and easy to navigate, as well as students contributions making it more relatable and personal. This would be an improvement to the college as it makes information much easier to access and creates an environment for sharing and giving back.

Secondly, I would suggest Baruch to incorporate podcasts to improve the college. This new media phenomenon would be a great addition to having student and facility features to not only discuss daily events, but also issues and topics important and relevant to students. Having weekly podcasts with a student and guest featuring speaker, not only does it provide information to students, but gives them a voice to speak their mind on topics and issues to promote and inspire change.

These two suggestions can go a long way in making the school more interactive and open environment. I believe new media can improve the college greatly, and podcasts and wikis are two that can be used!

  1. I think Baruch already has a form of wiki it's trying to develop: MyBaruch. It's still in its infancy stage but I think given time, MyBaruch will be a similar version of a social media interaction between the college and its student like you imagine.
