Blog: Privacy

The issue of privacy and confidentiality are related to new media and are inseparable terms when discussing the topic.

As users of social media platforms such as Facebook, the collection of personal data is something that is important to both the company and people. From the point of view of the company, they are selling data for profit, which then is used to tailor our experience and consumerism based on the information bought. However, from a consumer's perspective, this can be seen as very intrusive, given that most are automatically consenting to such consent with an option to opt-out. Things that we say, post, like, or search are not private anymore, which is concerning to many that would like to keep personal preferences and information, personal. Not only that, but breaches of information due to cyber security attacks can leak not private information, but confidential information such as your passwords. Entrusting this information with new media platforms such as social media has people worried due to said issues. There has been talks of reform for the sake of consumers as well as the longevity of companies survival with some suggestions being an opt-in system to create true agreement and understanding for consumers. More regulation and reinforcement should also be created to help incentivize protection of personal data as well as creating trust for companies. All in all, the issues of privacy and confidentiality when it comes to new media, is very prevalent with recent leaks of data as well as talks of regulation. Personal, I think that companies do have a social responsibility to not take advantage of our vulnerability when using sites like social media to capitalize. From a business perspective, they do have a right to conducting business, it's just that the lack of regulation can lead to less emphasis on consumer protection, which is a big issue.

  1. I completely agree with you on the fact that companies should have social responsibility and there there needs to be more regulation and reinforcement on peoples privacy that is being exposed. I like how you gave a different perspective other than the consumer side!

  2. I agree with you that privacy is a right each person should have. It's just as you said: Talks of reform have been had in order to regulate the internet to ensure safety. Is that really the path we should go down? Net Neutrality is a highly discussed topic: By having more regulations, we're taking away a fundamental part of the internet: its freedom.
