Creativity

New media is special, it gives the tools to the general public. Unlike the old media, with a select few with the resources to create content, new media has the characteristic of enabling all those who have internet access and something they want to share.

Therefore, creativity can be fostered much more easily through this platform of new media. Places like YouTube encourages creativity by allowing anyone to post films and short videos, acting as a distribution network for viewers to watch and support. Blogs can be seen as an outlet of creativity, writing and pictures to be shared to the world through independent means.

In The New Yorker's article "1+1+1=1" mashups are one example of creativity spawned from new media. The artist, Danger Mouse, mashed Jay-Z and the Beatles album to create "The Grey Album", which was massively successful, and became an example of a one user's ability to use the technology to tend to his creative needs.

New media's feature of being accessible and collaborative in nature, means it's perfect for creative minds to express themselves and share it to the world. From mashups, to film, to writing, they all are great examples of this awesome technology!

  1. I agree with you that with social media, the world is brought closer together. It fosters creativity and connection. Because of social media, so much art has been created. Without it, we would have no means (no easy means) to communicate and many collaborations between artists would not have happened!
