Blog social networking

With the rise of new media, many people and corporations have had to adapt to the uses and benefits of such, like social networking through blogs. People have had the benefits of being able to connect to old friends and new friends through these sites and its made society much more intertwined and connected. It's definitely been beneficial in the way that we communicate and stay in touch.
Corporations on the other hand, have taken the opportunity to market themselves through these sites, leveraging the huge user base of sites like Facebook and people's time spent on such sites. Companies like Facebook, also now have access to an unthinkable amount of personal information on everyone and it's definitely been a source of controversy in terms of privacy issues. That would definitely be one of the "darker" sides to social networking and media because of the sensitivity of this information and the uses of it.

In the article,"Great Wall of Facebook: The Social Network's Plan to Dominate the Internet and Keep Google Out." written for Wired, it goes into depth on the lucrative business that these corporate companies have ventured into with social media and the likes. Facebook is a huge business built on the technology of social networking, and the platform is continuously growing, bringing in massive amounts of revenue from ads. With such a lucrative industry, would follow many controversial topics such as our dependency and addiction to these sites as well as the amount of information that the sites have on us.

"Antisocial networking", an article from the New York Times, details both sides of the argument of whether or not this phenomenon of social networking through technology is beneficial or have unforeseen consequences in the long run. While we are more connected than ever, through hundreds of messages being sent and receives daily, as well as being able to connect to someone miles away, it is taking away an aspect of human interaction that we think to be "more social." Replacing social, and more personable, interaction with the phone or computer screen has some people questioning whether or not this technology is really beneficial. However, there are arguments that it is as simple as it's making us more connecting and that could be more good than harmful.

To give my insight and opinion, I would have to say that this technology of social networking has really been a change in my life, being able to connect with people more frequently. However, I do feel that the some of the population have become very dependent on it and miss out on a lot of the human interactions due to it. To combat that, the technology might evolve in the future to be more limiting which seems very backwards thinking. Companies have already noticed this issue and have features to limit phone usage for example. I personally hope more people realize the importance of personal interactions over cyber ones and the technology doesn't advance to a point where truly personal interactions become nonexistent.

  1. I love how you use sources to back up your opinions and research. I particularly agree that with how big social media has become, they have become avenues of profits
